# Seawater Flow Meter for Desalination Plants: How to Select the Right One
**Quick Answer:** For seawater desalination, choose a magnetic flow meter (electromagnetic) or a Coriolis mass flow meter. Magnetic meters handle high conductivity seawater and large pipe sizes (DN80 to DN600). Coriolis meters give you mass flow and density readings for chemical dosing. Both work with 4-20 mA HART output. Send us your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), and flow range for a quote.

## Why Most Standard Flow Meters Fail in Seawater Applications
Seawater is not like fresh water. It has high conductivity, around 50 µS/cm. It contains salts, chlorides, and suspended solids. Most mechanical flow meters with moving parts, like oval gear or turbine meters, get clogged or corroded within months. We saw this last year at a desalination plant in Oman. They used a turbine meter for brine flow. After 90 days, the rotor stopped turning because of salt crystallization.
The best options are electromagnetic flow meters and Coriolis mass flow meters. Both have no moving parts. No seals. No bearings. They do not touch the fluid directly.
## Electromagnetic Flow Meters for Seawater
Magnetic flow meters work on Faraday’s law of induction. Seawater is conductive, so it generates a voltage when it moves through a magnetic field. The meter reads that voltage and gives you a flow rate.
**Key parameters for seawater:**
- Minimum conductivity: 20 µS/cm. Seawater is 50 µS/cm, so it works.
- Lining material: PTFE or PFA. These resist chloride corrosion.
- Electrode material: Hastelloy C-276 or titanium. Standard stainless steel 316L corrodes fast in seawater.
