For round ducts up to DN600, a single point at the centerline often gives acceptable accuracy for ventilation control. The probe length should equal the distance from the mounting boss to the far wall minus 10 mm clearance. Do not let the probe tip touch the opposite wall.
For round ducts above DN600 or disturbed flow profiles, multipoint measurement is better. We recommend inserting the probe to 0.25D, then 0.5D, then 0.75D. Log the flow value at each depth and use an average. You can do this manually during commissioning, or order a Silver Instruments meter with multiple sensing points along the probe.

Install the insertion probe at least 10 pipe diameters downstream of a bend, damper, fan, or tee. Keep 5 pipe diameters upstream of another disturbance. Many ventilation ducts do not have this space. In that case, place the probe where the air stream is stable and check the reading against a portable pitot tube during commissioning.
Mount the probe through a 1.5 inch NPT or DN40 flange connection. Use a ball valve assembly if you need hot insertion or removal without shutdown. In clean ventilation air, a fixed compression fitting is enough.
