Why Turbine Meters Work Well for Low-Viscosity Fluids

A turbine flow meter uses a free-spinning rotor placed directly in the flow path. The rotor speed follows the linear velocity of the fluid. Low-viscosity fluids let the rotor spin freely without thick boundary layers. This gives fast response and high repeatability on clean liquids.

In practice, most engineers choose a turbine meter for custody transfer, batching, or fuel tracking. The reason is simple. A well-built turbine meter offers turndown ratios up to 10:1 or 15:1 on low-viscosity liquids. You do not need a long upstream run when the flow profile is stable.

Keep one thing in mind. Turbine meters are not ideal for dirty fluids or liquids above 100 cP. For those cases, a positive displacement meter like an oval gear flow meter may be a better fit.

DN15 to DN200 line sizes cover small pilot plants up to large water or fuel pipelines. Flow ranges start at 0.08 m3/h and reach 800 m3/h depending on line size. Accuracy is often ±0.5 percent of reading for standard models. Repeatability is ±0.1 percent.

Outputs include pulse, 4-20 mA with HART, and local digital totalization. For hazardous areas, we offer ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 certified models. Process connections include flanged, threaded, and tri-clamp for hygienic lines. Wetted parts are usually 316 stainless steel or anodized aluminum for certain fuel meters.

Temperature and pressure ratings matter. Standard units handle -20 to 120 °C and up to 100 bar. We ask customers for their minimum and maximum flow rates. This prevents oversizing and keeps the rotor in its linear range.
