Water Flow Sensors: Cost-Effective Rotor and Vane Modules for Machinery Integration

Rotor and vane water flow sensors use a simple rotating element. Water moves past a paddle wheel or a small vane. A Hall effect sensor or reed switch counts each rotation. The electronics package is small. The wetted materials are usually PPS, brass, or stainless steel. Because the design has few parts, the unit price stays low. These sensors are not replaced often. Many customers in Southeast Asia order them as annual spare parts for cooling loops on packaging machines. They keep two or three spare sensors in the maintenance cabinet. That is a practical approach.


Rotor Module Specs for Cooling Loops and Washdown Skids

The Silver Instruments SAI-R25 rotor water flow sensor covers 1 to 30 L/min. It is available in DN15 and DN20 BSP or NPT threads. Accuracy is 1.5 percent of reading from 2 to 25 L/min. Repeatability is 0.3 percent. The body is brass or PPS. Seals are FKM. Operating pressure is 10 bar. Media temperature can reach 80 °C. The standard output is a 5 to 24 V square wave pulse. Accuracy is 2 percent of reading over the full range.

Here is the thing. A rotor sensor may stall at 0.5 L/min because the paddle wheel cannot overcome friction. A vane sensor works better at low flow because the vane has a different mass and housing shape. In practice, if the flow falls below 2 L/min for most of the cycle, choose the vane module.
