Flowmeter Rotameter Systems: Low-Cost Purge and Sample Gas Local Display Elements

Where These Rotameter Systems Fit in Your Process

Purge gas flow often runs between 5 L/h and 500 L/h. Sample gas flow runs a bit higher, but still low. A rotameter gives you a direct visual reading on a scale. Operators see the float position and know flow is correct. No power wiring, no signal loop, no transmitter calibration. That is why panel builders in Southeast Asia and the Middle East still specify these rotameter systems for analyzer cabinets and seal gas panels.


We have seen this on customer sites many times. A gas processing plant in Oman needed 40 purge rotameters for pressure transmitter impulse lines. The plant engineer wanted a simple local display element that survived 55 °C ambient and 4 bar purge pressure. A 316L metal tube rotameter with a 1/4 inch NPT connection worked well.


For a standard analyzer panel, the rotameter goes on the purge gas inlet or on the sample gas bypass. The operator checks the float position during rounds. If the float drops, the flow is low. If the float rises, the flow is high. That is enough for most process decisions.


Local Display Elements That Work Without Power

The local display element on a rotameter is the tube, float, and scale. No LCD, no backlight, no battery. That means no failure mode from power loss. Glass tube rotameters show the gas flow directly. Metal tube rotameters use a magnetic follower or a pointer on a scale. Both give immediate visual confirmation.


For purge applications, a glass tube with a 65 mm or 100 mm scale is common. For darker liquids or higher pressure, a metal tube with a magnetic indicator works better. In practice, most engineers skip the transmitter on simple purge panels. They add a 4-20 mA output only when the flow signal goes to a DCS or PLC.


Common Configurations for Purge Gas and Sample Gas

A standard purge rotameter setup for an analyzer panel includes a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch NPT inlet, a built-in needle valve, and a 316L stainless steel wetted path. Flow ranges from 0.1 L/h to 100 L/h are typical for air, nitrogen, or instrument air. For sample gas, the flow range may go from 0.5 L/h to 250 L/h. Higher flow rates up to 1000 L/h are available with a larger tube or a different float.


You can get a glass tube rotameter for clean, dry gas. The gas type matters. A sample gas with traces of H2S should use a 316L body and PTFE seals. The float can be 316L, Hastelloy C, or PTFE coated. Most standard rotameters are calibrated for air at 20 °C and 1.013 bar absolute. If your gas density differs, tell us. We can rescale the tube or provide a correction factor.


Materials and Options That Match Real Site Conditions

Low cost does not mean one material only. Silver Automation Instruments keeps stock of borosilicate glass tube rotameters with aluminum or 316L frame. We also build metal tube rotameters with 316L, PTFE, or Hastelloy C internals. For corrosive purge gas, you can specify a PTFE lined metal tube. For high pressure up to 40 bar, a metal tube is the safe choice.
